A Cannon
Monotony and boredom
Plague everything she sees
She wants to escape
She wants the sea
She wakes up again
And again and again
She puts on her lipstick
She talks to her friends
She walks down the same street
She looks at the same waves
She sees the sun rising
Marking another day
They tell her she's happy
But she still feels small
They don't understand her
They don't know anything at all
Angry at imperfections
She sees in her life
The boredom and monotony
Cut her like a knife
She wants to escape
She wants to flee
She wants to run
She wants the sea
Under the stars
Invisible in her house
She climbs out of bed
As quiet as a mouse
She uncaps a pen
Pulls paper out of a drawer
She writes letters to people
That claim to know her
Dear husband, she writes
Dear child, dear friend,
I love you, I'm angry
I love you again
Then she runs from the room
Down the stairs, through the hall
Down the street for the last time
She no longer feels small
She knows not where she's going
But she know's it's not here
Excitement and change
Overcome her fears
The waves become closer
And closer as she runs
She's leaving, she's leaving
Freedom's finally come
She stands on the dock
And looks out at the sea
Dark waves and dark skies
Are all that she sees
The shadow on the horizon
Is her vessel of escape
Laughing aloud
She is finally awake
Larger and larger
The shadow becomes
No longer frozen
She is ready to run
The hulking boat arrives
And she climbs on board
As she shakes with excitement
The ship leaves the shore
She knows not where she's going
But she knows it's not here
Excitement and change
Overcome her fears
She leaves the monotony and boredom
And the millions of days
She sees the shore disappear
She is sailing away
Wow! Very cool!
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite poem I've read by you. Awesome song choice too! I'm also a huge Regina Spektor fan, and I've heard this song a billion times, but still love it.
